July KIDS Column Features J.C. Hay

The Wilmore Newsletter announces that it is going to feature a new column focusing on "KIDS". We would like to spotlight "KIDS" who are achievers in sports, music, art, good grades, youth group, or whatever else "KIDS" do that make us proud and interested. The column will also emphasize parental influence and their devotion as well as sibling relationships within families. If you have a special "KID" or group of kids who you would like for our community to share your praise, please write a brief description and drop it off at City Hall. An interview will be set up with Kim Deyer to talk about your special person. We hope to be showered with a lot of good news about "KIDS". Thank you for your participation and remember you can say, "I read it in the Wilmore Newsletter!"

The July "KIDS" column would like to congratulate J.C. Hay for his achievements in baseball. J.C. has been playing baseball for about 10 years. He is the son of John and Peg Hay. Because John Hay was in the service, J.C.'s early career was a traveled one. J.C. started playing baseball in Wanesville, MO at the age of seven. Next, his dad was stationed in Schofield - Baks, Hawaii. J.C. continued to play baseball. After his dad retired from the service, their family moved to Greenup, KY. John Hay had a hard time staying in retirement; he took a job with the U.S. Postal Service. John worked at the Wilmore Post Office until a recent transfer to Lexington.

J.C. started at West Jessamine H.S. as a sophomore in 1995. As a junior, he was the starting center fielder. In 1997, West Jessamine County H.S. went to the district playoffs. J.C. finished by making "All District", a significant player's award for high school baseball.

This year J.C. attended the new East Jessamine County H.S. As a senior, he was chosen to be one of the three team captains. He was the starting center fielder with a batting average of .280. J.C. had 14 stolen bases and 9 bunt singles. J.C.'s coach, Steve Anderson described J.C. as"the fastest kid on the team". The team finished the season at 24 - 13. They were the district champions and made it to the Regional Semi Finals. Coach Anderson also said that he enjoyed having J.C. on the team for the past three years and he was proud of the team's achievements. J.C.'s leadership and good sportsmanship earned him the Coaches Choice Award.

J.C., an A - B student in high school, will be attending Lexington Community College in the fall. J.C.'s personal goals are to continue to practice and play baseball. Maybe we will see him playing for U.K. in the future! Good luck J.C.! Wilmore wishes you continued success as a student and an athlete.

J.C.'s family attends the Nicholasville Free Methodist Church. J.C. has an older brother, Jon, and a little sister, Rose. J.C's mother, Peg is the assistant manager at the B.P. on Nicholasville Road. She is perhaps J.C.'s biggest fan. As moms do, Peg has collected all of J.C.'s memorabilia. Here's one for the scrapbook!
