Police Officer of the Month

GURNEY LEE

Officer Lee was hired on August 15, 1998. He came by way of Eastern Kentucky University's School of Police Administration where he graduated with a 4.0 and at the top of his class with a Bachelor of Science Degree. At EKU, Officer Lee received the "Police Studies Academic Award," was recognized as an "Honor Scholar," was a member of the "Honors Program," was on the "Dean's List" and the "President's List," and he graduated "Summa Cum Laude."

Gurney is a Lexington native where he attended and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. While at Dunbar, Gurney received four Honor Roll Academic Awards, three Academic Booster Club Awards, one Achievement Award in U.S. History, one Achievement Award in German, one Department Award in Criminal Justice and one Department Award in Business Law. Gurney graduated from the Department of Criminal Justice Training Academy on Friday November 20th with honors. His academy training took ten weeks.

With a Second Degree Black Belt, and with an instructor certification in Taekwondo, Gurney hopes to do some instructing in Wilmore, maybe in connection with D.A.R.E. He has interests in community policing and looks forward to working with our senior citizen population, neighborhood programs, such as home security surveys and with the D.A.R.E. program.

In the past, Officer Lee has tutored students experiencing problems in the classroom. He has organized and delivered several presentations at national conferences. He has been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, as well as being involved in the organization of a social research study.

Gurney will be moving to Wilmore in the near future and will be visiting churches in the area in an attempt of finding a church home.
